Community
At St Mary's, we feel it is very important to teach our pupils that we need to work together to support people in our local community as well as our brothers and sisters around the world.
We achieve this in many ways through our work with local charities and groups to support our community in many ways.
HILLTOP NURSING HOME
Our closest neighbours live at Hilltop nursing home which is a home for people who suffer with dementia. Every Christmas, our Faith leaders and members of Year 5/6 sing carols for the residents and their families and many family members tell us that this is a highlight for them all. Christmas cards are exchanged and it is a real opportunity for our pupils to give something back to members of our local community.
COFFEE MORNINGS
We hold coffee mornings for parents at different times during the school year. These generally support fundraising for local charities such as the food bank, Macmillan and Beacon Counselling. We have also held coffee mornings for CAFOD to raise money during Harvest time.
CELEBRATING OTHER CULTURES
Our families are always happy to share events which are happening in their own cultures and communities and we are grateful for what we can learn from our diverse community at St Mary's. One example is Chinese New Year celebrated in the photos below.
EASTER FAIR
Our Easter Fair raised an amazing £627 this year. Our parents and families supported us in donating items for sale through a range of events before the fair such as "Crazy Hair Day".
The support from parents on the day was amazing and there was a real sense of community at the event.
PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER AGENCIES
Supporting our families in any way we can is a priority for everyone at St Mary's. We have done this in many ways through our pastoral work but we have also opened up our school hall to host other agencies who would like to reach out to support our families. These agencies include health teams, financial support and employment advice.
Parents value the opportunity to talk to professionals in a safe space.
FRANCIS HOUSE
Every year during Lent, we support Francis House, a local children's hospice in Didsbury.
Thank you once again to our families for their generosity.
ST GEORGE'S JUNIOR CAROL FESTIVAL
Every December, St Mary's children join pupils from lots of other schools across Stockport for a Junior Carol Festival at St George's church.
This is an opportunity for our pupils to take part in a beautiful service run by Stockport Music Service. Members of the service along with a number of musicians lead the service and our pupils join a choir of nearly 200 young people from across the borough.
It is a wonderful way to begin our Advent journey every year.
Stockport County
Our school work closely with Stockport County on a range of projects and events.
We offer our school facilities for the club to run the HAF club during the holidays for our pupils and those in the local area. This club is offered free to around 50 children each holiday and gives them opportunities to have fun with new friends and old.
Stockport county have supported St Mary's with PE kit for the whole school, projects linked to knife crime and anti social behaviour for our older pupils and they have provided food hampers for our families at Christmas.
