ENGLISH

 We will be starting writing our acrostic poetry next week. However in school during the cold write one child asked, " What is a poem?"

A very good question, here is what other famous authors have said poetry is...

    Poetry       ~ Eleanor Farjeon

What is Poetry? Who Knows?

Not a rose, but the scent of the rose;

Not the sky, but the light in the sky;

Not the fly, but the gleam of the fly;

Not the sea, but the sound of the sea;

Not myself, but what makes me

See, hear, and feel something that prose

Cannot: and what it is who knows?

 (*from Eleanor Farjeon's Poems for Children,1938)

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness ...  It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.    ~ Robert Frost

A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom.     ~ Robert Frost

Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.    ~ Rita Dove

Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood.    ~ T. S. Eliot

Poetry teaches us music, metaphor, condensation and specificity.    ~ Walter Mosley

Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world, and makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar.    ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

Poetry is thoughts that breathe, and words that burn.    ~ Thomas Gray

I think poetry using wonderful words to create music and pictures in the mind!

So this week we will explore language  to add to our acrostic poem about ourselves.

First, look at the power points to remind you what an adjective and noun phrase is

Them look at the list of adjectives and find the ones that describe you,  remember to use your imagination you can be who ever you want to be in your poem!

Can you put two together to make a noun phrases that will make your poem even more spellbinding!

Make a list of these to use in your poem next week.

The word beautiful contains the suffix 'ful'

suffix is a letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a. root (base) word. Common suffixes include s, ed, ing, ly, and tion. A suffix changes the meaning of the root or base word. Therefore, children, need to understand the meanings of suffixes and how they affect the words they're attached to.

So in 'beautiful' the root(base) word is beauty and the suffix is 'ful'. hence the meaning of the word beautiful is full of beauty

Notice that the 'y' changed to an 'i' before adding the suffix.

You can also add the suffix 'fully' to beauty to make  beautifully. or carefully

The opposite of 'ful' is 'less' so if we add less to the root(base) word care get careless
